Seoraksan Fall Foliage Guide 2026: Peak Dates, Cable Car & Routes
Seoraksan fall foliage is among the first major mountain color changes in Korea each autumn. For 2026, the official forecast puts first foliage around October 3 and peak color around October 25.
Do not build the whole day around the cable car. Tickets are sold on the day, on site, and service can change with weather. Think of the cable car as a nice extra, then choose a walking route you would still be happy to do if it stops running.
For a first trip, aim for mid-to-late October, arrive early, and decide on your walking route before checking the cable-car queue. Peak is forecast around October 25, but weather can shift the best-looking days.

When Should You Go in 2026?
The official forecast places Seoraksan’s first foliage on October 3 and peak around October 25. That does not mean October 25 is the only good day.
A practical window is:
- Early October: expect mostly green with some early high-elevation color.
- Mid-October: improving color and usually a better balance between scenery and peak crowds.
- Around October 25: strongest forecast window, but also the period most likely to be busy.
- Late October: still worth checking, especially in lower areas, but wind and rain can shorten the season quickly.
Best Seoraksan Fall Foliage Routes
For a gentler valley walk, follow the route toward Biseondae Rock from the Sogongwon area. For a longer, steeper hiking day, choose the Ulsanbawi trail. Both give you a real walking plan if cable-car operations change.
Choose the cable car if:
- You want the Gwongeumseong view without a long hike.
- You are traveling with parents or someone who does not want a full mountain trail.
- You are comfortable arriving early and accepting that weather may change the plan.
Choose a walking route if:
- Foliage is your main goal and you want more time among the trees.
- You dislike waiting for tickets.
- You want your day to work even if the cable car is suspended.
The official cable car operator says the ride runs from Seoraksan Sogongwon to the upper station near Gwongeumseong. Tickets are sold on site, and the visit is planned as a round trip because one-way tickets are not sold.
What to Know About the Cable Car
There is no advance reservation system for the Seoraksan cable car. The operator posts operating information based on weather and conditions, and VISITKOREA also notes that hours are announced one day before.
Do not plan a Seoul-to-Sokcho day around a specific boarding time. If possible, stay in Sokcho the night before, head to Seoraksan early, check the operation notice, and decide on the cable car once you see the weather and queue.
Is a Seoul Day Trip a Good Idea?
Possible, yes. Ideal at peak foliage, not really.
A same-day Seoul trip means a long transport day plus unpredictable autumn traffic. If you are traveling around the forecast peak weekend, staying in Sokcho gives you much more control over your morning.
If you still want a day trip, use the earliest practical transport and confirm your return bus before spending the late afternoon in the park.
What to Watch for in Peak Season
- Late arrival can mean a long cable-car wait. Go early and keep a walking alternative.
- Strong wind can stop service. The cable car is weather-dependent.
- October 25 is a forecast, not a guaranteed perfect day. Check recent conditions before you go.
- Peak-weekend traffic from Seoul can eat into the day. Staying in Sokcho gives you more control over the morning.
- City shoes are a bad backup plan. Even a cable-car visit involves uneven ground around the upper area.
A More Reliable Plan
If autumn scenery is the reason you are going, save one walking route before you leave your hotel. Then the cable car becomes a choice, not a gamble. On a crowded or windy day, that small bit of planning makes Seoraksan much less stressful.
What You Actually Pay and How to Get There
There is no national-park entrance fee for a normal Seoraksan visit. The main paid option is the cable car: the official 2026 round-trip fare is ₩16,000 for adults (middle-school age and above) and ₩12,000 for children aged 37 months through elementary school. There is no advance cable-car reservation; buy the ticket at the Sogongwon station on the day, and check the real-time operation notice first.
From Seoul, take an express or intercity bus to Sokcho (roughly 2½ hours depending on service), then use city bus 7 or 7-1 toward Seoraksan/Sogongwon or take a taxi. For more route options, see our Seoul to Gangneung and Sokcho transport guide. In peak foliage season, an overnight in Sokcho gives you a much better chance of arriving before the cable-car queue builds.
