Korea Fall Foliage Forecast 2026: Peak Dates & Best Places to See Autumn Colors

Published: Sep 30, 2026 · Updated: Oct 2, 2026

If autumn color is one of the main reasons you are coming to Korea, the first thing to know is that there is no single “best week” for the whole country. The Korea fall foliage forecast 2026, published by VISITKOREA and credited to Weatheri, moves from Seoraksan around October 25 to Bukhansan around November 4, then farther south to Naejangsan around November 11 and Hallasan around November 13.

Think of those dates as a planning anchor, not an appointment with the trees. In Korea, a few warm days, strong wind, or heavy rain can change what a place looks like quickly. Choose the right region first, then fine-tune the exact day closer to the trip.

Plan by region, not one national date: Use late October for Seoraksan and the northeast, early November for Seoul and central Korea, and November 11–13 as the forecast reference points for Naejangsan and Hallasan.

What “peak foliage” actually means

A single peak date does not mean every tree in the area turns at once. Mountain forecasts are most useful as a reference point. Elevation, tree species, sun exposure, rain and strong wind all affect color.

For Seoul, the 2026 forecast uses Bukhansan as the main reference: first foliage on October 23 and peak around November 4. Downtown palace gardens, ginkgo streets, and lower parks may look best on slightly different dates. For Seoul, use late October through the first half of November as a practical window instead of planning around one exact day.

Best Fall Foliage Trips Without a Car

You can reach every option below without renting a car, but “possible” and “easy” are not the same thing. The table uses Seoul as the starting point and rates the transport, not the walking or hiking.

Destination Starting city Main transport One-way difficulty Last-mile taxi
Central Seoul palaces and parks Seoul Subway + walk Easy No
Bukhansan Seoul Subway + local bus or walk to the trailhead Moderate; depends on the trailhead Usually no
Nami Island Seoul ITX-Cheongchun or Gyeongchun Line to Gapyeong, then walk, local bus or taxi + ferry Moderate Optional
Hwadam Botanic Garden Seoul Rail or bus to the Gonjiam area, then shuttle, walk or taxi Moderate Often useful
Seoraksan Seoul Express or intercity bus to Sokcho, then local bus or taxi Hard; long full day Optional
Naejangsan Seoul KTX to Jeongeup, then local bus or taxi Hard; long full day Helpful
Jirisan or Hallasan Seoul Long-distance rail or bus, or a flight, followed by local transport Not recommended as a Seoul day trip Route-dependent

For Nami Island, the official visitor information lists the 1.5 km trip from Gapyeong Station to the wharf as about 20 minutes on foot or about 5 minutes by local bus or taxi. The ferry crossing takes about 5 minutes.

Where to go by travel date

If you are in Korea around October 20–27

Go north or higher in elevation. Seoraksan is one of the better places to aim for in this window, especially around the October 25 forecast peak. Peak weekends can be busy, so leave Seoul early, avoid relying on the cable car as your only plan, and expect traffic around Sokcho and the national park.

If you are in Korea around October 28–November 6

This period offers several possible autumn options in one trip. Seoul, Bukhansan, Nami Island, Hwadam Botanic Garden, and central Korea may be approaching good color, but check current conditions before going.

If you are in Korea after November 7

Look farther south or choose places known for later foliage. Naejangsan is forecast to peak around November 11, while Hallasan is forecast around November 13.

Best easy autumn options in Seoul

You do not need a mountain hike to see good fall color. Seoul Metropolitan Government regularly highlights foliage routes across the city, including:

  • Deoksugung-gil: central, flat and easy to combine with Deoksugung Palace and the Seoul Museum of Art.
  • Seoul Forest: good for ginkgo, park scenery and a relaxed half day.
  • Olympic Park: large open spaces and mature trees, with easy subway access.
  • Haneul Park: better for silver grass and broad autumn scenery than dense red maple color.
  • Samcheong-dong and palace areas: useful if you want autumn scenery without building your day around a dedicated foliage trip.

If you only have one autumn day

Choose based on how much travel you want.

Stay in Seoul: Deoksugung + Jeongdong + Seoul Forest or Olympic Park.

Day trip with transfers: Nami Island or Hwadam Botanic Garden. Both need more planning than the Seoul stops above, and Hwadam requires a timed reservation.

Full mountain day: Seoraksan if you are traveling in late October, or Naejangsan if your dates fall closer to mid-November.

What to check before choosing the exact day

  • Do not book around one exact forecast date. Peak foliage can shift. Keep one or two flexible days if color is important to you.
  • Do not assume another mountain’s timing applies everywhere. In 2026, early October is not the safest choice for classic full-color mountain scenery.
  • Do not choose a famous weekend spot without a crowd plan. Seoraksan, Hwadam, and Naejangsan can become busy during peak weekends.
  • Do not assume all of Seoul peaks with Bukhansan. Mountain and downtown foliage do not turn at exactly the same speed.
  • Do not ignore wind and rain. A storm near peak can strip leaves quickly, so recent photos and local conditions matter more than an old forecast once your trip is only a few days away.

Three days before you go

Three to five days before your visit, check the official forecast again and look at recent dated photos from the exact place you plan to visit. That is more useful than relying on a generic “Korea autumn peak” graphic.

The best plan is to choose a region that fits your dates, keep a second option nearby, and make the final decision after checking recent conditions.
