SRT vs. KTX in 2026: What Changed and Which Station to Use

Published: Sep 7, 2026 · Updated: Oct 2, 2026

Until August 2026, travelers usually treated KTX and SRT as separate high-speed rail services. KTX used Seoul Station, Yongsan, and other KORAIL stations, while SRT mainly used Suseo Station in southeast Seoul.

That changed on September 1, 2026. KTX and SRT were integrated under KORAIL, former SRT trains were renamed KTX-Sancheon, and bookings for high-speed trains serving Suseo moved to KORAIL+ and the KORAIL website.

For travelers, the practical choice is now less about the train brand and more about the departure station. For your trip, the practical question is which of the two stations is easier to reach from where you are staying.

Last verified: October 2, 2026. The September 1 integration, KORAIL+ booking channels, temporary legacy SRT-app availability, and fare changes below were checked against current KORAIL and SR notices. App interfaces and third-party booking availability can change.

SRT vs. KTX: The Short Answer

The old SRT-versus-KTX distinction still appears in older guides and search results, but current bookings are handled through KORAIL. The most useful difference for travelers is where the train departs.

Feature Suseo Station Seoul Station and other KORAIL stations
Main Seoul-area station Suseo Station Seoul Station, Yongsan, Cheongnyangni, and other stations depending on the route
Best for Gangnam, Jamsil and southeast Seoul Central Seoul, Myeongdong, Hongdae and travelers already near Seoul Station
Typical long-distance destinations Busan, Mokpo, Yeosu, Jinju, Pohang and other major cities Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Gwangju, Gangneung and a wider national network

For most visitors, the station location matters more than the train brand.

If you are staying around Gangnam or Jamsil, Suseo can save you a frustrating cross-Seoul trip before you even get on the train. If your hotel is around Myeongdong, Jongno, Hongdae, or Seoul Station, KTX from Seoul Station is usually more straightforward.

What Changed on September 1, 2026

KORAIL and SR tested cross-operation in early 2026, including KTX service from Suseo and SRT service from Seoul Station. Full integration began on September 1.

KORAIL+ and the KORAIL website became the main booking channels on September 1, 2026. KORAIL also said the legacy SRT app may temporarily continue offering non-member general-ticket bookings, although mileage and integrated discounts can be limited there. Travelers can also use station ticket counters or supported third-party booking services.

Older guides may still direct you to the SRT app. For current bookings, start with KORAIL+ or the official KORAIL website, even when your journey begins at Suseo.

If this is your first high-speed train trip in Korea, see our KTX booking and boarding guide.

Suseo remains useful for travelers staying in southern and southeastern Seoul; only the operator, train branding, and booking channel have changed.

What Is Suseo Station, and Who Should Use It?

Suseo Station sits in southeastern Seoul and was developed as the main terminal for SRT high-speed rail.

The station connects directly with Seoul Subway Line 3 and the Suin-Bundang Line, making it especially convenient for areas such as Gangnam, Jamsil, Songpa, and parts of southern Seoul.

Its location made it a practical alternative for people living or staying in the Gangnam area.

If your hotel is near:

  • Gangnam
  • Jamsil
  • Songpa
  • Seolleung
  • Suseo
  • southern sections of Line 3 or the Suin-Bundang Line

then Suseo can be the more practical starting point for a high-speed train trip.

When Seoul Station Is the Better Choice

Seoul Station is often the easier high-speed rail gateway for visitors staying in central or western Seoul.

If you are staying in central or western Seoul, getting to Seoul Station is usually simpler than traveling across the city to Suseo.

Seoul Station is particularly convenient if you are staying around:

  • Myeongdong
  • City Hall
  • Jongno
  • Itaewon
  • Hongdae
  • Seoul Station itself

It also connects directly with the AREX airport railroad, which is useful if your itinerary links an airport trip with an intercity train journey.

It also has extensive English signage, shops, and food options. If you are staying near Yongsan, check departures from Yongsan Station as well, especially for Honam and Jeolla Line journeys.

SRT and KTX Routes: Do They Go to the Same Places?

There is a lot of overlap, but the networks have never been identical.

SRT traditionally operated major routes from Suseo toward destinations on the Gyeongbu, Honam, Jeolla, Gyeongjeon, and Donghae corridors. That includes cities such as Busan, Dongdaegu, Daejeon, Gwangju-Songjeong, Mokpo, Jeonju, Yeosu, Jinju, and Pohang, depending on the service.

KTX has a broader national network and serves additional corridors and stations from Seoul, Yongsan, Cheongnyangni, and other major stations.

For a traveler heading to a major city such as Busan, the practical decision is often not “Does this train exist?” but rather:

Which Seoul departure station is easier for me to reach?

That is especially true as the operating systems become more integrated.

Suseo to Busan vs. Seoul Station to Busan

If Busan is your main destination, compare the options in our Seoul-to-Busan transport guide.

Busan is the easiest example.

Both stations have direct high-speed services to Busan. A traveler in Jamsil may save time by leaving from Suseo, while someone in Myeongdong will usually reach Seoul Station more easily.

Compare the full journey: accommodation-to-station time, train time, fare, and the arrival station.

Are SRT and KTX Trains Very Different Inside?

For most travelers, the differences are modest.

Both are modern high-speed trains designed for long-distance travel. The exact seat layout, train model, storage space, and onboard feel can differ by rolling stock, but neither should be chosen solely because one supposedly feels much more luxurious than the other.

If you are carrying luggage, the more important questions are:

  • Can you reach the departure station easily?
  • Is your departure time convenient?
  • Is the train direct?
  • Are seats still available?

Those factors usually matter more than small differences in seat design.

What Happened to the Fare Difference?

SRT historically charged slightly less than KTX on comparable routes. From September 1, 2026, KTX fares were reduced to the former SRT level on average. For example, the standard Seoul–Busan fare fell from ₩59,800 to ₩54,400.

Check the exact train and fare in the official booking system because promotional discounts, routes, and stopping patterns vary. If your itinerary includes several long-distance rail journeys, compare point-to-point fares with our Korail Pass cost guide.

How to Book High-Speed Trains from Suseo

Use the official KORAIL+ app or KORAIL website.

Search for your route using Suseo as the departure station if that is the station you want.

The booking process has four basic steps:

  1. Choose your departure station.
  2. Choose your destination.
  3. Compare available high-speed trains and times.
  4. Pick the train that works best for your location and schedule.

For reservations, seats, and luggage, see our KTX booking and boarding guide.

Which Station Is Easier from Gangnam?

Usually Suseo.

Suseo was built to serve Seoul’s southern districts and is connected to Line 3 and the Suin-Bundang Line. From parts of Gangnam, Jamsil, and Songpa, it can be significantly easier than going north or west toward Seoul Station.

But “Gangnam” is a huge area.

If you are near a subway line that takes you directly toward Seoul Station, the difference may be smaller than expected. Check your actual hotel location in Naver Map or KakaoMap before deciding.

Start with the easiest departure station, then compare the available trains.

Which Station Is Easier from Myeongdong or Hongdae?

Seoul Station is usually easier.

Myeongdong is only a short subway or taxi ride away, while Hongdae connects directly to Seoul Station via AREX.

Traveling to Suseo from those areas usually adds local transit time unless its departure schedule is substantially better.

What About Travelers Arriving at Incheon Airport?

If you land at Incheon Airport and want to continue directly to another Korean city, Seoul Station can be easier because AREX connects the airport with Seoul Station.

That said, the best option depends on your final destination and the specific train timetable.

Do not cross Seoul solely because an older guide says SRT is cheaper. Compare the current fare and the transfer time first.

Suseo Station Is Not Seoul Station

The station name on the ticket matters: Suseo and Seoul Station are in different parts of the city.

A ticket departing from Suseo does not mean Seoul Station.

If your ticket says Suseo, go to Suseo.

If your ticket says Seoul, go to Seoul Station.

Can You Take KTX from Suseo?

Yes. Trial cross-operation began in February 2026, and the integrated network has operated KTX services from Suseo since September 1.

If your booking shows a KTX departure from Suseo, follow the station name printed on the ticket.

What Happened to the SRT App?

KORAIL+ and the KORAIL website became the main booking channels on September 1, 2026. The legacy SRT app may temporarily continue non-member general-ticket bookings, but it is not the preferred channel and integrated benefits may be limited. Station ticket counters remain available.

Which Station Is Easier for Foreign Travelers?

Choose based on station location and timetable, not brand loyalty.

If Suseo is closer to your hotel and the train time works, use Suseo.

If Seoul Station is closer and offers the schedule you want, use Seoul Station.

Reducing unnecessary transfers is especially useful when traveling with luggage.

Which Should You Choose? A Simple Decision Guide

Choose Suseo if:

  • You are staying in Gangnam, Jamsil, Songpa, or southeast Seoul.
  • Suseo is clearly faster to reach from your accommodation.
  • The available departure time is better for your itinerary.
  • You are traveling to a destination served directly from Suseo.

Choose Seoul Station if:

  • You are staying in Myeongdong, Jongno, City Hall, Hongdae, or central Seoul.
  • You are connecting from AREX or arriving from Incheon Airport.
  • You want the most familiar station environment for a first trip.
  • Seoul Station offers the better departure time.

Do not choose based only on:

  • The old idea that SRT is always cheaper.
  • The assumption that KTX is always faster.
  • The train brand printed in an older guide.

Use the current departure station, timetable, and fare rather than an older comparison of the two brands.

Practical Recommendation

If you are visiting Korea for the first time, start by looking at your accommodation on a map.

If your hotel is in central Seoul, check trains from Seoul Station first.

If you are based in Gangnam or Jamsil, check Suseo first.

Then compare the official timetable and fare.

FAQ

Is SRT the same as KTX?

They were separate services until August 2026. Since September 1, former SRT services have operated under the KTX system, and bookings for Suseo departures use KORAIL channels.

Does SRT leave from Seoul Station?

SRT traditionally used Suseo as its main Seoul terminal, and trial cross-operation included an SRT service from Seoul Station before full integration. Current bookings use the KTX name, so check the departure station on the ticket.

Can KTX leave from Suseo?

Yes. KTX services operate from Suseo in the integrated network.

Is Suseo Station convenient for tourists?

It is very convenient if you are staying in Gangnam, Jamsil, Songpa, or southeastern Seoul. It is usually less convenient than Seoul Station for travelers based around Myeongdong, Jongno, or Hongdae.

How do foreigners book trains from Suseo after September 1, 2026?

Search for Suseo departures through KORAIL+, the KORAIL website, or a station ticket counter. SR says the legacy SRT app and website may temporarily allow non-member general-ticket bookings, but KORAIL channels are the primary option and integrated benefits can be limited in the legacy flow.

Which is better for Seoul to Busan: Suseo or Seoul Station?

Both can work well. Choose the station that is easier to reach from your hotel, then compare available departure times and fares.

Can I take KTX from Dongtan to Busan?

Possibly, but do not assume that every train stops at Dongtan. Search Dongtan as your departure station and Busan as your destination in KORAIL+ or on the KORAIL website. Since September 1, 2026, trains on the former SRT network have been sold as KTX or KTX-Sancheon. Direct availability and travel time depend on the date and train, so check the live result before planning around a specific departure.

How long is Dongtan to Suseo by high-speed train?

Do not rely on the old 17-minute SRT commuter figure. The dedicated Dongtan–Suseo SRT 690 service ended on April 1, 2024, and the September 2026 integration changed the booking system. Search Dongtan to Suseo in KORAIL+ for your exact date. If no direct high-speed result appears, use the current local-transit option instead.

Final Thoughts

The former SRT-versus-KTX comparison is now mainly useful for understanding older information. For a current trip, check which station is easiest to reach, search the KORAIL timetable, and compare the available departures and fares.
