What Is Seoul Light DDP, and What Will You See?
A media facade uses a building’s exterior as the projection surface. At DDP, the art stretches across 222 meters of curved architecture, so images shift as they move around the building.
This fall’s theme is K-Original Light. Three media-facade works draw on Korean art and culture, while a separate laser-art program combines light and sound. A short overview of each work follows.

The Break Point: Nam June Paik × VERSEDAY
For this piece, VERSEDAY has taken material from Nam June Paik’s video experiments, including Global Groove, and reworked it for DDP. Paik explored how video could change color, shape, and movement, and that is a useful starting point when you’re watching: pay attention to how the images change, as well as what they show. The Nam June Paik Art Center has more background if you’d like to read about the work before your visit.
Watch one full sequence before taking photos. The projection stretches across a wide section of the building, and focusing on one part through a phone screen can make it easy to miss the larger composition.
In Search of the Mountain Within: Yoo Youngkuk × Hayoun Kwon
Yoo Youngkuk returned to mountains throughout his abstract work. Hayoun Kwon brings those forms into a digital setting, placing broad areas of orange, purple, and green across DDP’s curves. Look at how the building changes the outline of the landscape rather than trying to identify a specific mountain. The city’s Korean announcement explains the collaboration in more detail.
Cheongguyeongeon × 2GREY: Words and Landscapes in Light
This collaboration draws on the Korean verse and natural imagery of Cheongguyeongeon. The projected imagery, light, and landscapes remain accessible even if you do not read Korean.
A small detail that may help when you’re checking the program: the English title varies between official listings. You may see The Night Words Shine or Poetry-Starry Night. Look for Cheongguyeongeon × 2GREY, or the Korean title 말이 빛나는 밤, and you’ll know you’ve found the same work.
DDP 365 Light × Jeho Yun: Laser Art
Jeho Yun’s work combines laser, sound, and light at the Yugu Exhibition Hall (유구전시장). Save the Korean venue name on your phone and follow the event signs after watching the facade. Staff can also point you toward the exhibition hall.
Show Times for September 8–13
The event runs until 10:30 p.m., but the final listed screening begins at 10:00 p.m. The remaining dates and performance times below follow the official timetable. All times are Korea Standard Time.
| Dates | Scheduled screening starts | Live performance |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday–Thursday, September 8–10 | 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, and 10:00 p.m. | No live performance listed |
| Friday, September 11 | 7:30, 8:00, 9:30, and 10:00 p.m. | SOULSCAPE, 8:20–9:00 p.m. |
| Saturday, September 12 | 7:30, 8:00, 9:30, and 10:00 p.m. | HYPNOSIS THERAPY, 8:20–9:00 p.m. |
| Sunday, September 13 | 7:30, 8:00, 9:30, and 10:00 p.m. | SOULSCAPE, 8:20–9:00 p.m. |
Live performances take place at Eoullim Square (어울림광장). On Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, arrive before the 8:00 p.m. screening if you also want to see the 8:20 p.m. performance.
For a weekday visit, arriving around 7:10 p.m. leaves time to find the viewing area before the first screening. Later starts provide flexibility if dinner or transportation takes longer than expected.
How to Get to DDP by Subway
Use Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station (동대문역사문화공원역) on Lines 2, 4, and 5. Exit 1 is the route listed in the official tourism guide. Do not confuse it with Dongdaemun Station, which is a separate stop.
You can also search 동대문디자인플라자 or DDP in your map app. Once you arrive, let the event signs guide you to the facade, Eoullim Square, and the laser-art area. DDP is a whole complex, so reaching the map pin is your starting point; leave a few minutes to find the part you want to see first.
If you are still getting used to transfers and exit numbers, the Seoul Subway Guide 2026: How to Ride, Fares, Apps & Local Hacks is useful before this evening out.
Travelers using a wheelchair or stroller should follow elevator signs rather than relying only on the numbered exit. Visit Seoul lists accessible restrooms, parking, elevators, and information services at DDP. For current accessibility guidance, ask at the information desk or call DDP at +82-2-2153-0000.
A Practical Dongdaemun Evening Plan
Eating before the show keeps the rest of the evening flexible. You can stay longer if a work catches your attention and continue to the laser-art area afterward.
On a weekday, you could eat around 6:00 p.m., reach DDP shortly after 7:00 p.m., and start with the 7:30 p.m. screening. From there, see how you feel: spend a little more time around the building, find the laser art, or head back when you’re ready. These are suggested timings, so move dinner earlier if you’re traveling from farther away or prefer a slower walk.
On the final weekend, leave the evening open until after 9:00 p.m. if you want to see a live performance. Shopping can fit before or after the program, but carrying several bags through a crowded viewing area may be inconvenient.
Food at the Festival
The announced K-Food Zone near DDP’s outdoor Eight Junction area includes food and drink booths with seating. Admission to the festival is free, but food and drinks are sold separately. Eat beforehand if you want a full meal, then use the booths for a snack or drink.
The optional DDP × Dongdaemun Super Pass connects neighborhood routes and participating-business offers. Its website is Korean-only, according to the city’s English announcement, and the pass is not required for Seoul Light DDP.
Where to Watch and How to Take Photos
Step back before choosing a viewing spot. A little distance provides a broader view when the projection wraps around the building’s curves. Watch one sequence from a fixed position, then move between screenings if you want another angle.

If you do want another angle, moving between sequences gives you time to look around without missing as much. Keep the paths clear, and if an area is crowded, ask a staff member where there’s room to watch. For anyone visiting with children, choosing a meeting point together before the show starts is a small thing that can make the evening easier.
For phone photos, start with your flash off. If the colors look much brighter and flatter on your screen than they do in front of you, try lowering the exposure a little. A wide photo gives you the shape of the building, while a short video keeps some of the movement. You might also want to compare a normal photo with night mode: because the projections keep changing, a long exposure can turn those details into a blur.
What if It Rains?
The event is scheduled to continue in the rain. If severe weather forces a cancellation, DDP will post an update on its official website. Check the same-day notice before traveling when poor weather is forecast.
Bring a compact umbrella or rain jacket and wear shoes suitable for standing outdoors. If you have been shopping, dropping bags at your hotel first will make it easier to move between viewing areas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Seoul Light DDP free? Do I need to buy a ticket?
Yes, the festival is listed as free admission, with no admission purchase in the published visitor information. You can keep your budget for dinner or a snack afterward. Separate exhibitions, food, and shopping may have their own charges, so check those individually if you’re adding them to your evening.
Is September 13 included?
Yes. Sunday, September 13 is the scheduled final day, including the evening program. If that is your only available night, check for same-day changes before traveling.
Can I arrive at 10:30 p.m.?
No. The event closes at 10:30 p.m., and the final listed screening begins at 10:00 p.m. Arrive earlier so you have time to reach the viewing area.
Which remaining night should I choose?
Choose September 8–10 for more frequent screening starts. Choose September 11 or 13 for SOULSCAPE, or September 12 for HYPNOSIS THERAPY. A weekday may be less busy, but crowd levels can vary.
Do I need to understand Korean?
The projections, music, and light give you plenty to enjoy without Korean. Keep the Korean venue and program names saved for signs and navigation, especially if you want to find the laser-art area.
Will the same show continue after September 13?
If your trip starts later, check what DDP has scheduled for your dates. Seoul has announced continuing nighttime programming through DDP 365 Light, but this fall edition ends on September 13 and has its own lineup. Later programs may have different schedules and content, so check DDP’s current calendar for your travel dates.
