Where you stay in Seoul affects how much time you spend in transit and what is within walking distance. The city covers a large area, so a convenient neighborhood for one itinerary may be inconvenient for another.
For a first trip, four areas are worth comparing: Hongdae, Myeongdong, Gangnam, and Jongno, including Insadong and nearby hanok neighborhoods. They differ in atmosphere, nightlife, price, and airport access.
Last verified: September 24, 2026. Airport-rail service, typical journey time, and the subway connections below were checked against current AREX and Seoul Metropolitan Government information. Train schedules, hotel branding, room availability, and nightly prices can change, so confirm them before booking.

Where to Stay in Seoul: Neighborhood Comparison at a Glance
Book by station, not by the district name alone. A hotel described as “Hongdae” or “Gangnam” may be several stops or a long walk from the place you pictured. Check the hotel pin, the walk to the station entrance, and an elevator route for luggage before paying. There is no single best exit for every hotel.
Hongdae — Airport Access and Late Evenings
- Choose it when: You want the AREX All-Stop Train, Line 2, and restaurants or bars near your hotel.
- Base near: Hongik University Station. Check the exact pin because some “Hongdae” stays are closer to Hapjeong or Sangsu.
- Time in the area: A three- to four-hour evening covers a walk, dinner, and one nightlife stop.
- Avoid it when: You are a light sleeper or most of your sightseeing is around the palaces.
Myeongdong — Central Sightseeing and Shopping
- Choose it when: You want a practical first-trip base near shopping, Namdaemun, and central Seoul sights.
- Base near: Myeongdong Station for Line 4, or Euljiro 1-ga for Line 2 and the north side of the shopping area.
- Time in the area: Allow half a day if you are combining shopping, a meal, and Namsan or Namdaemun.
- Avoid it when: You want a residential neighborhood or plan to spend most days south of the Han River.
Jongno and Insadong — Palaces and Walkable Historic Sights
- Choose it when: Gyeongbokgung, Insadong, Ikseon-dong, and early sightseeing starts matter most.
- Base near: Anguk for Insadong and Bukchon, or Jongno 3-ga for Ikseon-dong and Lines 1, 3, and 5.
- Time in the area: A palace-to-Insadong-to-Ikseon route can fill six to eight hours with stops.
- Avoid it when: Late-night dining and clubs are more important than quiet evenings.
Gangnam — Choose a Specific Southern Seoul Cluster
- Choose it when: Your appointments, business, shopping, or events are mainly south of the river.
- Base near: Samseong for COEX, Gangnam Station for offices and nightlife, or Apgujeong for clinics and designer shopping.
- Time in the area: Give one cluster at least half a day rather than treating all of Gangnam as a short walk.
- Avoid it when: Your daily plans center on palaces, Myeongdong, or western Seoul.
1. Hongdae: Airport Access and Late Nights
Hongdae works best when airport access or late evenings matter more than being close to the palace district. Hongik University Station connects Line 2, AREX, and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line, but it is a large station. Check which entrance is closest to your hotel instead of assuming every Hongdae address is convenient with luggage.

When This Base Works
- The AREX All-Stop Train gives you a direct ride from Incheon Airport to Hongik University Station. Current travel time depends on the terminal and train; compare the options in our Incheon Airport to Seoul guide.
- You want to return to restaurants, bars, or live music without a late cross-city ride.
- You are comfortable using Line 2 for central and southern Seoul rather than walking to major historical sights.
When to Stay Elsewhere
Choose another base if you are a light sleeper, need quiet streets outside the hotel, or plan consecutive early mornings at the palaces. Weekend evenings can be the least comfortable time to move luggage through the busiest streets, so check your arrival route before the trip.
An Easy Day from Hongdae
Spend the afternoon around Yeonnam-dong and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park, continue into Hongdae for shops or a performance, then have dinner near your hotel. If shopping is the main reason for choosing the area, use our Seoul shopping neighborhood comparison before booking.
Hotels to Compare
- Mid-range: L7 Hongdae by LOTTE — rooftop pool, modern design, and steps from Exit 2.
- Upscale: RYSE, Autograph Collection — a design-focused hotel in central Hongdae.
- Budget: Time Travelers Relax Guesthouse — dorm and private-room options.
2. Myeongdong: Central Sightseeing and Shopping
Myeongdong is useful for a first trip because it sits between several central sightseeing areas, but the station choice still matters. Hotels near Myeongdong Station favor Line 4 and easier connections toward Seoul Station. Hotels near Euljiro 1-ga favor Line 2 and the north side of Myeongdong.
When This Base Works
- You want to combine shopping with Namdaemun, Namsan, City Hall, or Euljiro.
- You expect to return to the hotel with shopping bags during the day.
- You prefer a busy commercial area where visitor services are easy to find.
When to Stay Elsewhere
Myeongdong is less convincing if you want neighborhood cafes outside your door, quiet residential streets, or several days focused on Gangnam and southeastern Seoul. Shopping streets are also less useful early in the morning, before many businesses open.
An Easy Day from Myeongdong
Start at Namdaemun Market, return through Myeongdong for lunch and shopping, then continue toward Namsan in the late afternoon if the weather is clear. For a wider first-trip route, use the five-day Seoul itinerary; for shopping priorities, compare Seoul’s main shopping areas.
Hotels to Compare
- Mid-range: Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong 2 — an option east of Myeongdong’s main shopping streets; check the walking route to your preferred station.
- Mid-range: L7 Myeongdong — directly across from Myeongdong Station Exit 9.
- Upscale: The Grand Lotte Seoul (formerly Lotte Hotel Seoul) — connected to a department store near Euljiro 1-ga.
3. Jongno & Insadong: Palaces and Early Starts
“Jongno” covers more than one useful hotel zone. Stay near Anguk when Gyeongbokgung, Insadong, and Bukchon are the priority. Stay near Jongno 3-ga when Ikseon-dong and transfers between Lines 1, 3, and 5 matter more.

When This Base Works
- You want to reach palace gates before the main daytime crowds.
- You prefer walking between historical sights, craft shops, tea houses, and one evening meal.
- You are comfortable with quieter nights and fewer late dining options on some side streets.
When to Stay Elsewhere
Choose Hongdae or another nightlife base if late bars are central to the trip. Bukchon is also a residential area, not an entertainment district: keep voices down, follow posted access rules, and do not assume every lane is open for unrestricted photography.
An Easy Day from Jongno
Allow six to eight hours for Gyeongbokgung in the morning, lunch and browsing in Insadong, then one cafe or meal in Ikseon-dong. Our Insadong vs. Ikseon-dong guide gives the exact start points and a shorter two-hour version.
Hotels to Compare
- Hanok stay: Rakkojae Seoul Main Hanok — a traditional hanok-style stay in Bukchon; check current room amenities before booking.
- Boutique: Sunbee Hotel Insadong — close to Insadong’s main street.
- Apartment-style: Orakai Insadong Suites — kitchenette-equipped suites ideal for families.
4. Gangnam: Choose a Specific Southern Seoul Base
Gangnam is a district, not one walkable hotel zone. Samseong, Gangnam Station, and Apgujeong serve different plans, so choose the station closest to the activity that brings you south of the river.
Pick the Station Before the Hotel
- Samseong: Best when COEX, exhibitions, or nearby offices are the anchor.
- Gangnam Station: Better for offices, restaurants, and late activity around the station.
- Apgujeong: Better for clinics, designer shopping, and appointments in that part of the district.
When to Stay Elsewhere
Do not choose Gangnam just because it sounds central. If most of your days are in Jongno, Myeongdong, Hongdae, or around the palaces, repeated cross-city trips can outweigh the hotel benefits. Also check the route after your final appointment; the nearest station may not be on the line you expect.
An Easy Day from Samseong
Keep the day in one cluster: visit Bongeunsa and COEX, take a long lunch or attend your event, then have dinner near the hotel. If cafes and pop-ups matter more than COEX or appointments, compare the walking plan in our Seongsu-dong guide before deciding where to stay.
Hotels to Compare
- Upper-end: Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas — directly connected to COEX Mall and Line 2.
- Upper-end: Andaz Seoul Gangnam — directly connected to Apgujeong Station on Line 3.
- Mid-range: GLAD Gangnam COEX Center — near Samseong Station and COEX.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Which neighborhood is closest to Incheon Airport?
Hongdae is one of the most convenient areas for airport transit. The AREX All-Stop Train runs directly from Incheon Airport Terminal 1 or 2 to Hongik University Station in roughly 50 to 60 minutes, depending on the airport terminal, without a transfer.
Is it better to stay in Gangnam or Myeongdong for shopping?
It depends on what you plan to buy. Myeongdong is more convenient for Korean skincare, Olive Young, road-shop cosmetics, and accessible street fashion. Gangnam is better for high-end luxury fashion, trendy designer flagships, and premium department stores.
Is Seoul safe to walk around at night in all these areas?
Seoul is generally considered one of the safer major cities for visitors. Walking around busy, well-lit streets in Hongdae, Myeongdong, Jongno, or Gangnam after dark is common, but travelers should still use normal city precautions and remain aware of their surroundings.
