Gangneung and Sokcho look like an easy pair on a map: two east-coast cities, beaches in both, mountains nearby. The planning snag is that they do not share the same rail access.
For a Seoul to Gangneung and Sokcho trip, start with this distinction: take the KTX to Gangneung, but use a bus for Sokcho. If you only want Sokcho or Seoraksan, traveling through Gangneung adds a transfer you may not need. If you want both cities, that same connection becomes useful.
My pick for a first visit is three days and two nights: train from Seoul to Gangneung, bus north to Sokcho, then a direct bus back to Seoul. It gives each city room to feel like a stop, rather than a place you saw between departures.
Which Route Should You Choose?
| Your trip | Start with this route | Main planning issue |
| Gangneung only | Seoul → Gangneung by KTX; return by train | The station is not your beach or hotel |
| Sokcho or Seoraksan only | Seoul → Sokcho by direct bus | Choose the correct terminal at both ends |
| Gangneung and Sokcho | Seoul → Gangneung → Sokcho → Seoul | Book the train and bus legs separately |
| Two cities with a hiking day | The same loop, with an extra night in Sokcho | Keep the hiking day separate from the main transfer |
These are route recommendations, not guaranteed connections. Check the actual departures before committing to hotels. Reversing the loop also works: go to Sokcho first, continue south to Gangneung, and finish with the train to Seoul. Choose the direction that gives you better tickets and less rushing.
Seoul to Gangneung: Take the KTX, Then Plan the Last Mile
Start with the station that works for your Seoul hotel
Search Gangneung (강릉) as your destination on the official KORAIL English website. Compare departures from Seoul Station (서울역) and Cheongnyangni (청량리) for your travel date.
Want to compare current times and fares in English right now? You can search Seoul–Gangneung KTX-Eum departures and book directly (affiliate link — booking through it costs you nothing extra and helps support this site).
Do not treat those departure stations as interchangeable. A convenient train time from the wrong side of Seoul can cost you more effort than a slightly later departure nearby. Compare the entire journey from your hotel, not just the minutes spent on the train.
The Korea Tourism Organization describes Seoul–Gangneung KTX-Eum travel as roughly two hours. Treat that as an orientation, not a promise for every service: the timetable for your selected train is what matters. Add time for getting to the platform and traveling onward after arrival. (KTO Gangwon itinerary)
If you are connecting through Seoul Station with luggage, check the station layout before departure: Seoul Station Transfer Guide 2026: KTX, AREX, Subway & Taxi Connections.
Check the train number, not only the destination
Keep your issued ticket accessible and check its departure station, date, time, train number, car, and seat. At the station, match the train number to the departure board before heading down to the platform.
For a first visit, I would aim to reach the station about 30 minutes before departure. That is a comfort buffer, not an official check-in requirement. Give yourself more time if you are arriving on another service, collecting tickets, or navigating with a large suitcase.

Gangneung Station is an arrival point, not the whole destination
A train ticket to Gangneung does not take you directly to a beachfront café. Decide where you are going next before leaving the station: your hotel, a central lunch stop, or the coast.
Anmok is a sensible choice if the point of your afternoon is coffee and sea views; KTO includes its beach and café area in its east-coast coverage. Choose one coastal area for the afternoon instead of assuming every beach stop belongs in the same easy walk. (KTO east-coast guide)

With an overnight bag, a local bus may suit a relaxed arrival. With a full-size suitcase, compare a taxi to your accommodation before committing to multiple local transfers. Check the current route and fare rather than building your budget around an old travel post.
Seoul to Sokcho: A Direct Bus Is Usually the Cleaner Plan
There is no passenger KTX service to Sokcho in 2026. The Korea National Railway project overview still lists the Chuncheon–Sokcho and Gangneung–Jejin connections as construction projects. A future railway announcement is not a service you can book for this trip. (Korea National Railway project status)
That makes a direct bus the natural starting point if Sokcho is your only coastal base. Taking a train to Gangneung first means adding a cross-city transfer and another intercity journey.
Pick the Seoul terminal before you pick a departure
Both Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Dong Seoul Terminal serve Gangwon destinations including Sokcho. Start with the one that makes sense from your accommodation, then check the exact route and arrival terminal. Use KOBUS for express services and the operator-linked intercity booking systems for intercity options. (KTO bus guide)
One small but useful distinction: Seoul Express Bus Terminal and Central City share a subway-station area, but they are not the same departure hall. Seoul’s own terminal guide distinguishes the Seoul Express terminal on the east side from Central City on the west. Follow the terminal printed on your ticket. (Seoul terminal guide)
Sokcho has two terminals—save the right one
Sokcho Express Bus Terminal (속초고속버스터미널) and Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal (속초시외버스터미널) are different places. Save your actual arrival point in your map app, then route from there to your hotel.
Sokcho’s official tourism site places the express terminal close to Sokcho Beach, describing the beach as about five minutes away. That is handy for a beach-focused stay, but it does not mean every bus labeled “Sokcho” arrives there. (Sokcho tourism transportation information)

If you are visiting Seoraksan, remember that arriving in Sokcho is not the same as arriving at the park. Plan the onward local journey from your accommodation, and give a hiking day its own space in the itinerary.
Gangneung to Sokcho: The Transfer to Plan Carefully
For a two-city trip, use an intercity bus between Gangneung and Sokcho. Sokcho’s tourism transportation page lists Gangneung among the cities on its intercity network; check the departure you actually intend to use rather than relying on an undated timetable image. (Sokcho transportation information)
The key distinction is Gangneung Station (강릉역) versus Gangneung Intercity Bus Terminal (강릉시외버스터미널). Do not plan this as a train-platform-to-bus-platform connection.
Search the intercity terminal as your bus departure point and verify it on the resulting ticket. Then build the journey in separate pieces:
- Your hotel or Gangneung Station to the stated bus departure point.
- Time to find the counter or boarding bay and complete any ticket collection.
- The booked bus journey.
- Your arrival terminal in Sokcho to your accommodation.
For a first-time visitor, I would reserve a generous part of the day for this move rather than schedule a timed attraction immediately afterward. That is a planning allowance for the whole transfer, not the bus’s scheduled running time.
If you are coming straight off a KTX, avoid the shortest technically possible connection. These are separate bookings; do not assume a delayed train means the bus will wait or your next ticket will be automatically replaced.
Traveling south from Sokcho to Gangneung and then catching a KTX needs the same caution. Put the road journey well before the train you cannot afford to miss.
Tickets, Prices, and What to Do When Booking Gets Awkward
Compare the total trip cost
Use the fare shown for your selected date, departure, passenger type, and seat class. There is no single useful “Seoul to the east coast” price.
For the two-city loop, budget for three separate long-distance tickets: Seoul–Gangneung train + Gangneung–Sokcho bus + Sokcho–Seoul bus, then add local transport.
For Sokcho alone, compare a direct bus against the entire train-plus-bus alternative, including the transfer across Gangneung. Comparing only the first ticket can make a complicated route look deceptively cheap.
This guide does not give a fixed 2026 fare or copy a daily departure list: those details belong to the service you select in the live booking system. Check the cancellation conditions before paying, particularly if your accommodation plans are still flexible.
Book the return journey while planning the outbound trip
A useful booking order is:
- Check the outward and return legs for the dates you want.
- Check the Gangneung–Sokcho connection if you are visiting both cities.
- Choose accommodation once the transport pattern works.
- Complete the bookings and keep each confirmation together.
Do not assume a missing departure means a route has permanently stopped; the operator may not have released that date yet. Equally, do not build a nonrefundable itinerary around a departure that is not available to book. Holiday sales can follow special rules, so consult the current operator notice.
An English booking page does not guarantee every payment will work
KTO lists official express and intercity booking websites, as well as international booking alternatives. Coverage and checkout requirements can differ. If one option fails, check another authorized option for the same route or use a staffed terminal counter, subject to seat availability. (KTO booking options)
Read the collection instructions. A reservation confirmation is not automatically the boarding ticket: the Tmoney intercity system explains ticket issuance and the information needed to retrieve a booking. Keep your booking details and payment card available when required. (Tmoney intercity booking information)

A Practical Three-Day East Coast Itinerary
Day 1: Seoul to Gangneung, then a coastal afternoon
Take a morning train that leaves you time to settle in. Drop your luggage if your accommodation can hold it, have lunch, and choose one beach-and-café area for the afternoon.
Keep the first day light. The appeal is having time to sit by the coast, not proving you can fit every Gangneung recommendation into five hours. Stay overnight in Gangneung so you are not rushing back to the station the moment the afternoon becomes pleasant.
Day 2: Move to Sokcho, then explore near your hotel
Have breakfast, collect your luggage, and travel to the correct intercity departure point. Once in Sokcho, check in or arrange a bag drop before going out.
If you are staying near Sokcho Beach, an easy beach walk makes sense. If your accommodation is elsewhere, start nearby instead of crossing the city simply because a suggested itinerary says “beach first.”
This is your transfer day. A flexible afternoon is more useful than a chain of prepaid time slots.
Day 3: One more stop, then a direct bus to Seoul
Leave enough time for breakfast and one manageable outing before collecting your bags. Confirm your departure terminal again; it may not be the terminal you arrived at.
Check the scheduled bus duration, then allow additional road-delay margin before any fixed plan in Seoul. Avoid pairing a tight bus arrival with an expensive onward departure.
If Seoraksan is the main reason you are coming, I would make this four days and three nights, with two nights in Sokcho. Use the extra day for the park and keep the return day easier. Choose activities that fit current conditions and your abilities rather than trying to squeeze a major hike between transport legs.
If You Have Less Time—or the Weather Changes
With two days and one night, pick one base. Gangneung suits a train-based coastal break; Sokcho makes more sense if that city or Seoraksan is your priority. You can connect both, but the transfer takes away time you might rather spend outside.
With one day, Gangneung is the more straightforward version of this particular rail itinerary. Book a realistic return before filling the day. I would not combine both cities as a casual day trip from Seoul.
In rainy or windy weather, reduce outdoor stops and keep the hotel-to-terminal journey simple. A café afternoon can be a good substitute for a long coastal walk; it is less helpful if reaching that café creates two extra transfers with luggage.
FAQ
Can I take a KTX directly from Seoul to Sokcho?
No. Sokcho does not have an operating passenger KTX service in 2026. Use a direct bus, or combine Gangneung’s rail connection with an onward bus if you also want to visit Gangneung.
Is there a train from Gangneung to Sokcho?
There is no operating passenger rail link between the two cities for this 2026 itinerary. Search intercity bus departures instead.
Is Seoul to Gangneung really a two-hour trip?
Roughly two hours is a useful train-journey reference, not a hotel-to-beach travel time. Check the selected service and add access time at both ends.
Should I visit Gangneung or Sokcho first?
Either direction works. Gangneung first gives you a train outward and bus home; Sokcho first lets you finish with a train from Gangneung. Let ticket availability and hotel plans decide.
Can I transfer immediately from Gangneung Station to the Sokcho bus?
Do not assume that. Verify the bus’s departure point and plan the journey there separately. Leave room for local transport, ticket collection, and delays.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for this basic city-to-city route. Trains and intercity buses handle the main legs, with local transport for your accommodation and activities. A car is a separate choice if you want multiple smaller stops away from those connections.
What is the biggest mistake to avoid?
Booking a train to Gangneung simply because you want to reach Sokcho, without checking the direct bus first. The train-and-bus combination earns its place when Gangneung is part of the trip.
Choose the Route That Leaves Time for the Coast
For Gangneung, start with the train. For Sokcho alone, start with the direct bus. For both, connect them once and give yourself at least two nights if you want a reasonably relaxed first visit.
Save your exact station and terminal names, check the return before leaving Seoul, and keep your transfer day light. The best route is the one that leaves you time for the places you came to see.
