At Seoul Station, KTX, AREX, and Subway Lines 1 and 4 use different platforms and gate areas. Identify your next service before following signs, and allow extra time for walking, escalators, and elevator queues. When you reach the correct area, check the train direction or departure board before passing the gate.

Last verified: September 24, 2026. Seoul Station’s KTX, AREX Express and All-Stop, Subway Line 1 and Line 4 connections, the AREX ticketing locations, and the accessibility notes below were checked against current AREX, KORAIL, and Seoul Metropolitan Government information. Platform assignments, passage routing, train times, and pickup points can change, so follow live signs and departure boards.

Exit numbers become useful once you know which part of the station you are in. For an indoor transfer, follow the service name rather than heading to an exit number from an unrelated set of directions.

Understanding the Station Layout

KTX uses the main Korail rail concourse. AREX is in the underground Airport Railroad area, with separate arrangements for Express and All-Stop passengers. Lines 1 and 4 have their own subway platforms and gates.

The official AREX Seoul Station guide includes station information and floor-by-floor Street View links. Use it to orient yourself before traveling; follow current signs if a passage is temporarily diverted.

Do not confuse the current passenger terminal with the historic Culture Station Seoul 284 building. For rail travel, look for signs to the current Seoul Station passenger concourse.

AREX to KTX at Seoul Station

  1. After leaving the AREX train, follow the signs toward KTX / Korail / Trains.
  2. Exit the AREX fare area using your ticket or transit card as required. Your AREX ticket does not cover the onward KTX journey.
  3. Continue up to the main Korail concourse using the signed escalator or elevator route.
  4. Check the departure board for your KTX train number, departure time and track.
  5. Go to the assigned track, then use your ticket to find the correct car and seat.

Have your KTX ticket ready before starting the transfer. If you still need to buy or change it, allow extra time at the ticket office or in the booking app.

How Much Transfer Time Should You Allow?

For a first visit with luggage, allow roughly 45–60 minutes between your scheduled AREX arrival and KTX departure. This is a conservative planning buffer, not an official minimum connection time or a measured walking time.

Allow more if you need to buy a ticket, wait for an elevator or move at a slower pace. A shorter connection may be possible for someone who knows the station, but it leaves less room for a missed turn or delay.

If you are flying into Incheon Airport, that station buffer is only one part of the journey. Separately allow for flight delays, immigration, baggage collection, walking to the airport station, waiting for AREX and the train ride itself. A flight’s scheduled landing time is not the time you will be ready to board AREX.

When You Reach the KTX Concourse

Match your train number and departure time to the live board before going to the track. Do not rely on a platform number in an old photo or itinerary.

For booking, seat classes and luggage arrangements, see our KTX travel guide.

KTX to AREX at Seoul Station

Leave the KTX platform for the main concourse and follow Airport Railroad / AREX signs toward the underground area. At the service split, choose Express or All-Stop rather than entering whichever gate is nearest.

AREX Express

Express trains link Seoul Station with Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2. They do not stop at Gimpo Airport or Hongik University. Buy a separate Express ticket and check its departure time and airport terminal.

The official Express Train guide lists the Seoul Station customer information center on B2. Follow the Express boarding instructions from that area rather than looking for a train platform on the same floor.

AREX All-Stop

Choose All-Stop for Gimpo Airport, Hongik University or other intermediate stations. It also serves Incheon Airport, but check the train’s destination: not every departure continues to the airport.

Use an accepted transit card or the appropriate single-journey ticket at the All-Stop gates. A KTX ticket is not a subway or AREX ticket. Check the AREX station guide and timetable for the current layout and departures.

For a comparison of airport trains, buses and taxis, see our Incheon Airport transport guide.

Subway Line 1 or Line 4 to KTX

  1. Get off at Seoul Station and follow KTX / Korail / Trains signs.
  2. Exit the subway fare area using the same transit card or ticket you used to enter.
  3. Continue to the main rail concourse. Avoid going outside unless station signs direct you there.
  4. Check your KTX train number and departure time on the live board, then go to the assigned track.

Arriving on Line 1

Line 1 connects Seoul Station with places including City Hall, Jongno and Yongsan. Once off the train, look for the KTX/Korail connection rather than following a general Way Out sign to street level.

Arriving on Line 4

Line 4 is useful from Myeongdong, Hoehyeon and Dongdaemun. Allow for the walk from its platform to the main rail concourse, particularly with luggage.

For fares, ticket gates and train directions, see the Seoul subway guide.

KTX to Subway Line 1 or Line 4

From the KTX platform, go up to the concourse and follow Subway signs. Then choose the line and direction for your destination.

  • Myeongdong: Line 4 toward Hoehyeon and Myeongdong. Myeongdong is two stops from Seoul Station.
  • City Hall or Jongno: Line 1 toward City Hall and Jonggak.
  • Yongsan: Line 1 in the opposite direction, toward Namyeong and Yongsan.

Check the line number and next stations on the platform signs. Color is a useful cue, but it should not be your only check. Use a subway ticket or accepted transit card to enter the fare area.

Reading the KTX Departure Board

Match these details with your ticket:

  • Departure time
  • Train number
  • Destination
  • Track number

Several trains may serve the same city, so the destination alone is not enough. Once the track is shown, go there and check the car number and seat number on your ticket. Platform markings help you find the boarding position for your car.

If the track is not displayed yet, wait near a departure board. If your ticket and the board seem inconsistent, ask station staff before boarding.

How Early Should You Arrive for KTX?

KTX does not require airport-style check-in. For a first visit, aim to be in the main rail concourse about 20–30 minutes before departure, with your ticket ready. Treat this as planning advice, not a boarding deadline.

Add time if you need to buy tickets, collect food, use the restroom or find an accessible route. If arriving on AREX, allow for the transfer before reaching the concourse as well.

Seoul Station to a Taxi

A taxi can be useful if your hotel is far from Lines 1 or 4, or another rail transfer would be difficult with bags.

Follow signs specifically for a taxi stand. A general exit may take you to a different side of the station rather than a taxi queue. Have the hotel’s full address ready to show the driver.

If booking through an app, choose a pickup location where the car can stop and follow the app’s meeting instructions. Check that you and the driver are on the same side of the station before waiting. If unsure where pickups are permitted, ask at an information desk rather than standing in the road.

Our Kakao T English guide covers the booking steps.

Taking a Taxi to Seoul Station

Tell the driver whether you need KTX or AREX, and show the station destination in your map app. For KTX, ask for the passenger station entrance; for AREX, specify the Airport Railroad area.

Before leaving the car, check the nearby signs and make sure you have all your bags. A drop-off at the wrong side of the complex can add a long walk, so include that possibility in your arrival buffer.

Large Luggage and Accessible Routes

Use a signed elevator route if stairs or escalators would be difficult. Leave room for passengers with mobility needs and allow for a queue. Keep walkways and train doors clear while checking your phone or tickets.

The official AREX facilities guide lists elevators and accessible boarding positions. For help within the Korail or subway areas, ask the relevant station staff.

Keep tickets and your transit card somewhere easy to reach. If you need the restroom or a break, allow time for it before continuing to the next platform.

If you need to leave bags between trains or before hotel check-in, compare lockers, T-Luggage, and delivery options in our Seoul luggage storage guide.

If You Get Lost

Stop somewhere clear of the main walkway. Find the nearest sign for your next service: KTX/Korail, Airport Railroad/AREX, Line 1, Line 4 or Taxi.

Major signs commonly include English. If the route is unclear, show a staff member your ticket or destination rather than continuing down an unfamiliar corridor. Ask for an elevator route at the same time if you need one.

Common Transfer Mistakes

  • Following an exit too early: use service signs for the transfer, then an exit number when leaving the station.
  • Entering the wrong AREX gate: distinguish Express from All-Stop and check your ticket before entering.
  • Assuming one ticket covers everything: KTX, AREX Express and local transit have different ticketing arrangements.
  • Using an old track number: check the live departure board for your train.
  • Counting only train travel time: include walking, elevators, queues and the time needed to find your car.

Seoul Station Transfer FAQ

Can I transfer between AREX and KTX inside the station?

Yes. Follow the connection signs between the underground Airport Railroad area and the main Korail concourse. Allow time for the walk and changes of level.

Does KTX share a platform with the subway?

No. KTX and Subway Lines 1 and 4 use separate platforms. Follow the signs for your next service.

Which subway lines serve Seoul Station?

Lines 1 and 4 serve the station, which also connects with AREX and other rail services. Check your route’s full line name before choosing a platform.

Can I take AREX Express to Gimpo Airport?

No. Use AREX All-Stop for Gimpo Airport. Express serves Incheon Airport Terminals 1 and 2.

Can I take a taxi directly from Seoul Station?

Yes. Use a signed taxi stand or the pickup point specified in your app booking.

How much time should I leave before KTX?

For a first visit, aim to reach the main rail concourse about 20–30 minutes before departure. If transferring from AREX, a conservative buffer is roughly 45–60 minutes between the scheduled trains, allowing time to reach the concourse as well. Leave more time if you need tickets, assistance or a break; these suggestions do not guarantee a connection after a delay.

Before You Start the Transfer

Have your next ticket or destination ready, follow the service name, and check the live train information before boarding. If you need help, ask before entering a gate or going down to a platform.
