Gimpo Airport to Seoul 2026: Routes to Hongdae, Myeongdong, Gangnam & Jongno

The route from Gimpo Airport to Seoul depends on your hotel’s nearest station. AREX is a direct option for Hongdae and Seoul Station. Line 9 serves Yeouido, Sinnonhyeon and Bongeunsa, while Line 5 runs to Gwanghwamun and Jongno 3-ga without a transfer.
Before choosing a train, look up the hotel’s exact address. A route that works well for one part of Gangnam or Jongno may leave you with a long walk in another.

Finding Gimpo Airport Station
From the domestic or international terminal, follow the signs for Subway / Airport Railroad. The rail connections are reached through the underground station area; allow time to walk there from arrivals.
Several lines meet at Gimpo Airport Station. Follow the name or number of the line you need, then check the platform display for the direction and destination. The floor markings help you navigate, but they do not replace the train information on the platform.
Gimpo Airport to Hongdae: AREX All-Stop
Take an AREX All-Stop train toward Seoul Station and get off at Hongik University Station. This is a direct route for hotels near Hongdae, Yeonnam-dong and Gyeongui Line Forest Park.
The train ride is about 15 minutes. That does not include the walk from your terminal, waiting for a train or the walk to your accommodation.
Hongik University Station is large. Check your hotel’s recommended exit before leaving the station, and look for elevator access if you have a heavy suitcase. A hotel described as being in Hongdae may still be some distance from the AREX platforms.
Gimpo Airport to Seoul Station: AREX All-Stop
Stay on the same Seoul-bound All-Stop service for Seoul Station. The train ride is roughly 20–25 minutes, excluding walking and waiting time.
This route suits accommodation near Seoul Station and can also work for parts of Namdaemun. At Seoul Station, allow time to get from the underground AREX platforms to your exit, onward train or taxi stand.
Gimpo Airport to Yeouido: Line 9 Express
Line 9 Express runs directly to Yeouido. It is a useful option for The Hyundai Seoul, IFC Mall and nearby hotels, although the final walk depends on the entrance you need.
Check that the arriving train is marked Express. Local trains also serve Yeouido but make more stops. If another station is closer to your accommodation, compare the full route rather than choosing Yeouido based only on the neighborhood name.
Gimpo Airport to Gangnam: Check the Exact Station
Line 9 Express is particularly useful for accommodation near Sinnonhyeon. It runs directly there from Gimpo Airport, with no need to travel through Seoul Station.
Gangnam Station itself is not on Line 9. For a hotel near Gangnam Station, compare the walk from Sinnonhyeon with a rail connection to the hotel’s nearest station. Do not assume the two station names refer to the same place.
Gangnam covers a large area. Use the hotel’s full address in a Korean map app before deciding where to get off.

Choosing an Express or Local Train
Line 9 operates both services. Read the platform display for the train type, direction and final destination before boarding.
A local train traveling in the correct direction may still serve your stop, but it will take longer. Check its destination as well: do not assume every train continues to the end of the line.
Traveling During Rush Hour
Line 9 can be crowded during commuter hours. With large suitcases, allow extra boarding time and avoid blocking the doors.
For a group with several bags, compare a taxi estimate with the rail journey. Confirm that the vehicle can accommodate everyone and their luggage; splitting the fare does not solve a lack of trunk space.
Gimpo Airport to COEX: Line 9 to Bongeunsa
Take a Line 9 Express train that serves Bongeunsa. This avoids a transfer for the COEX area, including Starfield Library and nearby hotels.
COEX is a large complex. Bongeunsa Station gets you to the area, but you may still have a substantial indoor walk to your hotel, exhibition hall or meeting point. Check the destination’s own directions for the most convenient entrance.
Gimpo Airport to Gwanghwamun: Line 5
Line 5 serves Gwanghwamun directly from Gimpo Airport. It is worth considering for accommodation near Gwanghwamun Square, Sejong Center and the western end of Jongno.
A route with a transfer may sometimes be faster, but the direct train avoids changing platforms with luggage. Compare the final walk as well as the time shown in your map app.
Gimpo Airport to Jongno and Ikseon-dong
Line 5 also serves Jongno 3-ga without a transfer. It can work well for accommodation around Ikseon-dong and parts of Insadong.
Jongno 3-ga is a large interchange, and the walk between its Line 5 platforms and some exits is long. Check the hotel address and elevator locations before choosing an exit. Other parts of Jongno may be better reached through a different station.
Gimpo Airport to Myeongdong: Rail or Taxi?
There is no direct train from Gimpo Airport to Myeongdong Station. The choice depends on how much luggage you have and which part of the neighborhood you are staying in.
Option 1: AREX to Seoul Station, then Line 4
Take AREX All-Stop to Seoul Station, then follow the transfer signs for Line 4 toward Hoehyeon and Myeongdong. Myeongdong is two stops from Seoul Station.
The rail journey is inexpensive compared with a taxi, but the transfer involves walking through Seoul Station. Include that walk in your estimate rather than adding only the time spent on each train.
Option 2: AREX to Seoul Station, then Taxi
Taking a taxi for the final leg avoids a second train and the walk from Myeongdong Station to the hotel. You will still need to get from the AREX platforms to a taxi stand, and the road journey can be slow in traffic.
Option 3: Taxi from Gimpo Airport
A direct taxi may be more practical with children, mobility needs or several bags. Compare the current estimate with the cost and effort of the rail journey. Gimpo is within Seoul, but road travel time still varies considerably.
If your hotel is closer to Euljiro 1-ga or another station, search that address rather than using Myeongdong Station as the destination by default.

When a Taxi Is More Practical
Consider a taxi if rail service has finished, your hotel is far from a suitable station, or transfers would be difficult with your luggage or mobility needs.
Follow terminal signs to the official taxi stand. If booking through an app, use the pickup location it specifies and check the vehicle details before getting in. Fare estimates can change with traffic, vehicle type and applicable surcharges.

What About the Airport Bus?
Gimpo Airport has city and limousine bus services. A bus may be convenient if a current route stops near your hotel and the departure time suits your arrival.
Check the airport’s public transportation guide for bus routes and stops. Compare the walk from the bus stop and expected road traffic with your rail options.
Tickets and Transit Cards
For AREX All-Stop and regular subway travel from Gimpo, use an accepted transit card with enough balance or buy a single-journey ticket for your route. A ticket or valid card is still required; there is simply no need to buy an AREX Express ticket for this journey.
AREX Express does not stop at Gimpo Airport. Do not confuse the AREX All-Stop train with either AREX Express or Line 9 Express.
If you plan to use a travel pass, check its coverage for the exact line and journey. Our Korea transit card guide compares the options.
